Tick tock….Is that a clock?

Ahmed MohamedAn innocent faces injustice because of a little homemade clock. A 14 year old Muslim boy Ahmed Mohamed, who resides in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas, had to learn what “stereo type” is all about the hard way. On Monday 14 September 2015, the little boy was detained by the police after his high school English teacher assumed that the clock he had invented looked more like a bomb. Without thinking twice the boy was pulled out of class to go to the principal’s office from where he was handcuffed and taken to the juvenile detention center by the police in order to conduct further investigations; even though he insisted that it was merely a homemade clock. As well as, to make matters worse the teenager was suspended from the school for three days. Such ordeal this child had to go through because of a harmless handcrafted clock.

On the bright side, young Ahmed gained tons of supporters all over social media, within 24 hours the “#IStandWithAhmed” took over the web world by storm. In addition to his glory, he received an invitation to visit the White House by the American President Barack Obama via twitter. Mark Zuckerberg also pitched in an invite by saying, “The future belongs to people like Ahmed. Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I’d love to meet you. Keep building.” Some people even went to the extent of uploading pictures of themselves holding a clock along with writing captions like, “Do I look dangerous yet?” and “I got a slow start today because I kept hitting “snooze” on my nightstand bomb.”. All this to show solidarity towards Ahmed, it’s great to see humanity does exist out there!

Another surprising news was that after all the distress the boy had to go through on Monday, there was no apology sent out to him from his school. Nonetheless, this child’s confidence to invent did not shatter, he will continue his passion of inventing. He is also motivating other inventors by telling them  “Don’t let people change who you are, even if you get a consequence for it, I suggest you still show it to people, at least show them your talent.”, evidently his dreams never faltered due to this minor setback in his life. In many ways, at the end of the day it all worked out for the best.
